Educators and school clinicians play a critical role in helping students navigate challenging life transitions. To support schools in this important work, Community Education Center welcomed Leah Nadler, LCSW, Clinical Director of Arches NJ, for a professional development workshop focused on supporting students experiencing divorce and family transitions.

Geared toward principals, directors, social workers, and child mentors, the workshop explored how divorce impacts students across developmental stages and highlighted the school’s role in providing effective, appropriate support.

Drawing upon both research and clinical experience, the workshop provided practical strategies for supporting students, partnering with families, and fostering resilience during times of transition. Participants gained valuable insight into recognizing students’ needs, understanding the effects of family conflict, and creating a supportive school environment where children feel safe and understood.

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. One participant shared, “This workshop helped me better understand how divorce can affect students and how to support them with sensitivity, consistency, and care.” Another attendee noted, “The information was very relevant and useful because it gave practical guidance for recognizing students’ needs and supporting them in a sensitive and appropriate way.”

By equipping school professionals with greater understanding and practical tools, this workshop reinforced the important role educators and clinicians play in helping students navigate family transitions and continue to thrive both academically and emotionally.
