Community Education Center, the educational division of COC, was proud to host an incredible series of workshops presented by Lois Kam Heymann, M.A. CCC-SLP, a globally recognized speaker and author of “The Sound of Hope: Recognizing, Coping with and Treating Your Child’s Auditory Processing Disorder” (Random House Publishing), a parent guide to the importance of listening skills development in children birth to 8 years old.
Separate workshops were tailored for parents and educators, ensuring the content was specifically relevant to their unique roles in supporting children’s language development. Educators were equipped with strategies to incorporate auditory skills into their lesson plans, alongside insights into identifying auditory deficits and listening challenges among children. Meanwhile, parents were educated on the hierarchy of listening and language skills, emphasizing their importance in developing reading skills and empowering them with crucial early detection tools.
Feedback from the events was incredibly positive.
“The workshop helped me realize how much I can do to help my auditory-challenged students,” says Mrs. C.L., a first-year teacher who attended the 20-hour training. “I feel empowered and greatly encouraged.”
The dozens of parents in attendance also praised the workshop, highlighting the practical tips and activities that could be easily adopted at home.
The CEC is grateful for the opportunity to once again play a vital role in shaping a better future for thousands of students.
